You can improve your connections with others.
Therapy for better relationships in Westchester, NY
Are you struggling with an important relationship in your life?
You want to have strong, supportive connections with important people in your life, but you feel lost when it comes to making that happen.
Your relationships are very important to you, but you often feel insecure and misunderstood, and you tend to overthink your interactions with others. When you try to make things better, you end up feeling worse, more distant. You may be aware that you are locked in a reactive pattern with the other person, but you just cannot figure out how to break it. When you struggle in your relationships, you don’t feel like the best version of yourself, instead, you might feel:
Anxious and avoidant
Isolated and trapped
Depressed and frustrated
Therapy gives you the skills you need to improve your relationships and make better connections with others.
How therapy works
The key to better relationships is understanding your own unique relational patterns.
Unlike a typical social or familial relationship, I encourage you to share whatever is on your mind, uncensored. With a deep sense of curiosity, we begin to uncover the patterns and unwritten “rules” that govern how you think, feel and act in your significant relationships, both those that are great and those that could use some work. Often, these patterns are formed, when we grow up in our family of origin, and they are so ingrained in us that we do not even think to question them or consider that there might be another way of being. Therapy presents an opportunity, where you can step back and consider who you are in your relationships, as well as why you react in certain ways. This deeper understanding leads you to act consciously with others, rather than react in ways that lower your self esteem and leave you feeling isolated.
Your relationship with your therapist is unique in that it is a safe space, free from all of the pressures of the social sphere, where, together, we experience directly, the way in which you relate to others. One of the key benefits of psychodynamic psychotherapy is that I am trained to give you supportive and empathetic feedback about your impact on others, in a way that friends, family and co-workers may not feel free to do. This knowledge is eyeopening and transformative because it allows you to understand the cause and effect of your own behavior with others. You learn what factors you can control in relationships, as well as how to set boundaries, when things feel out of control.
My clients report experiencing a significant benefit from this more holistic view of themselves in relationships. With their improved understanding of relational dynamics, some feel that they approach interactions with others with less anxiety and fear, while others feel better able to foster deeper connections with family, friends and co-workers. They also find that all of their relationships improve, not just those for which they sought help, because they are acting in a way that feels more authentic to who they are.
Therapy for relationship issues can help:
Alleviate anxiety, especially in group settings
Gain a better understanding of yourself in relationships, including the way in which you are perceived by others
Distinguish which relational dynamics are within your control, from those that are out of your control
Improve your understanding of relational dynamics, leaving you more able to act with sincerity and intention, rather than react in ways that compound relational difficulties
Relieve feelings of depression and isolation
